Artist Alert: how art is censored around the world

ARTICLE 19 launched a new issue of Artist Alert that summarises instances of censorship of works of art.

The recent cases include censoring of a popular Disney character over resemblance to the President in China, cutting of the same-sex kiss scene from The Simpsons cartoon in Argentina and sacking of an art curator over exhibition satirising forthcoming Winter Olympics.

Art, in any form, constitutes a key medium through which information and ideas are imparted and received. Artist Alert, launched by ARTICLE 19 in 2008, highlights cases of artists around the world whose right to freedom of expression has been curtailed and abused, and seeks to more effectively promote and defend freedom to create.
