Sing for Democracy winners announced

Sing for Democracy song competition launched in early February has been successfully completed. Eight songs of a critical nature dedicated to the topics of democracy, human rights, rule of law and social problems were submitted for the contest.

The jury that included two professional musicians, Elmir Mirzoyev and Firudin Allahverdi, and Art for Democracy coordinator, human rights defender Rasul Jafarov selected three winners.

Singer Aydan won the first place with her pop song “Crying over injustices” (Zemanenin Ishlerine). The second and third places were awarded to rapper Set the Strange Boy for his rap “Demos Kratos” and the rock group Tenqri for their “Folk Song” (Xalq Mahnisi).

Art for Democracy is a joint initiative of the Human Rights Club and its partner organizations, the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety and the Centre for National and International Studies. Building upon the previous Sing for Democracy Campaign, Art for Democracy seeks to use all forms of artistic expression to promote human rights and democratic reform in Azerbaijan, and serves as a platform for selfexpression for people involved in the arts.
